In addition to being a walking distance to Kroger, there are tons of great coffee shops, bars, and restaurants along 21st, including the very popular Kay Bob’s. Many of the options tend to be 2+ bedrooms, so you will have to look a little harder if you don’t want a roommate. It is mostly residential housing and apartments. A lot of first year med students live here, and there is usually a lot of cheap housing. If you need to live walking distance from both school and a grocery store, the Hillsboro Village area, South of campus, is your best bet. This wouldn’t be impossible considering there are 5-10 other MSTPs/med students in my building! (By Riley Bergman, G1) It could be feasible to live around here without a car if you find a friend to grocery shop with. I do have a car and despite rarely using it for day to day things, I do need it for grocery shopping/errands because there aren’t major stores around here. Now I’ve lived here for 3 years and love the area! I can walk to campus in ~10 minutes but can also walk to restaurants, bars and coffee shops in ~10 minutes! Midtown/Demonbruen bars, the small collection of restaurants in Edgehill, and the coffee shops, restaurants shops in Hillsboro are all ~10 minute walks. I ended up living in Music Row because my roommate had listed she was looking for a roommate on the Vandy Med Housing Spreadsheet. All of these are scattered among famous recording studios. Music Row is an interesting mix of things! I live in a larger condo building, but there are also a few big apartment buildings and intermixed townhomes and houses. Importantly, it is easily walkable to campus, about 15-20min, and the Vandy police drive around the area quite a bit since it is so close to campus adding an extra degree of safety. A couple blocks down from Midtown, you can also easily access Demonbruen Hill, which has additional large apartment buildings and another strip of bars. As such, it won’t be the most quiet area and has quite a bit of tourist traffic, but it is less touristy than downtown and may be ideal for someone who wants very accessible nightlife in a walkable area. The highlight of living in Midtown is that you will be very close to plenty of popular bars and restaurants.

These tend to be more new-construction and on the expensive end of the spectrum. In Midtown, you will find mostly apartment/condo buildings. Prices are going up in most of these neighborhoods, as is true for most of Nashville however, there are still plenty of affordable options on our stipends! Having roommates will obviously reduce cost, but it would still be manageable to live alone in some places. This site has most of the bike routes well mapped. Nashville is actively trying to become a more bike-friendly city and many students commute by bike, but there aren’t yet bike lanes everywhere. You can walk to campus in under 20 minutes from most places in Music Row, Midtown, Hillsboro and West End Park, but some choose to bike or have a very short drive in from these places. Many students especially appreciate being close to campus in the first two years of medical school when there isn’t much flexibility in your schedule. There are a number of neighborhoods to choose from in the peri-Vanderbilt area. The Nashville Guru ( ) is also an awesome website to get a more thorough look into each area!
